The Best Ayurvedic Ingredients for Barrier Repair: Restore and Strengthen Your Skin Naturally

In the world of skincare, the concept of barrier repair is becoming increasingly important. To put it simply, the skin barrier, also known as the stratum corneum (outermost layer of the epidermis), acts as a shield to protect the body from environmental stressors, bacteria, and dehydration. When this barrier is compromised, your skin becomes more susceptible to irritation, dryness, and premature ageing. Thankfully, Ayurveda offers a wealth of natural ingredients that can help restore and strengthen the skin barrier, providing long-lasting hydration and protection.

Ayurvedic Barrier Repair: The Foundation of Skin Health

According to Ayurvedic beauty, which is holistic in nature, your skin & hair are a barometer of your overall health.  The health of your skin is closely linked to the balance of internal energies (doshas) which comes with leading a lifestyle that suits your doshas (Take the dosha quiz to find out your dosha)   , maintaining a healthy, seasonal diet and the use of powerful plant-based skincare. The goal of Ayurvedic skincare is to harmonise the body and mind while supporting the skin’s natural healing processes. By incorporating ingredients like Urjasara Oil and and Urjasara Rich Cream (rich in Shala, and Phalini, Ceramides & other barrier repairing ingredients), these Ayurvedic ingredients help protect the skin barrier, improve texture, and prevent transepidermal water loss.

How To Remove Dark Circles: Home Remedies

Dark circles are quite common and usually don’t imply a serious health concern. However, their appearance still causes a lot of stress among people. 16 Powerful Benefits of Ashwagandha for Health and Beauty

Delving into the world of natural remedies and cures? Meet Ashwagandha, a potent herb with a 3000 year old rich history in Ayurvedic medicine. From enhancing mental well-being to boosting physical health, discover why this herb has been revered for centuries.

What is Ashwagandha?

One of the staples of ancient Indian medicine, Ashwagandha is commonly known as “Indian Winter cherry” or “Indian Ginseng”.

Ashwagandha's name comes from Sanskrit words “Ashwa”, which means horse and “Gandha”, which means odour translates to "smell of the horse". This refers to both its unique smell and its ability to increase strength, reminiscent of a horse's vigor.

Before that, let’s understand a bit about what makes Ashwagandha so special by overviewing five interesting facts about it.

  1. Ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub that grows in India, the Middle East, and parts of Africa. Every single part of the shrub is immensely useful in some way or the other.

  2. The name Ashwagandha is derived from the Sanskrit words “Ashwa”, which means horse and “Gandha”, which means odour. An Ayurvedic Scholar Charaka (100 BC) had quoted - ‘One obtains longevity, regains youth, gets a sharp memory and intellect and freedom from diseases, gets a lustrous complexion, and strength of a horse.

  3. According to traditional Indian classification, Ashwagandha is considered a Rasayana which means that it helps in lengthening the lifespan.

  4. Modern medicine classifies ashwagandha as an adaptogen, which means it helps the body adapt to stress. The herb is most well known for its rejuvenating and therapeutic attributes.

  5. Ayurveda also classifies the herb as Bhalya - something which increases strength and Vajikara - something which promotes healthy sexual functioning.

So what’s the best way to reap these benefits? You may have heard about Ashwagandha churna, a finely sieved powder that can be mixed with water, ghee or honey. This powder is extremely popular for its healing effects and one of the most common ways to use Ashwagandha.

In the next section let’s explore how different parts of this shrub are used as medicine.

The most common uses of the powder are for relieving conditions such as leucoderma, constipation, insomnia, rheumatism, nervous breakdown, goiter etc. The paste prepared from the powder is also applied to the joints to get relief from inflammation and pain.

Although there are various different types of Ashwagandha, the Nagori Ashwagandha is the supreme among all Ashwagandha varieties. For maximum benefits, only fresh ashwagandha powder must be used.

The other parts of the shrub are also extremely useful.

For instance, Ashwagandha leaves, though bitter in taste, are rich in iron and can be consumed as herbal tea. They help in relieving conditions like anemia and blood loss due to heavy periods. Herbal tea prepared from Ashwagandha leaves also serves as an energy tonic and relieves fever and painful swellings.

How To Use Ashwagandha for Hair?

Ashwagandha possesses powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which help in keeping the scalp healthy. Ashwagandha powder is a rich source of flavonoids that also possesses fatty acids, glucose, potassium, tannins, and nitrate. Tyrosine, an amino acid present in Ashwagandha stimulates the production of melanin and restrains the loss of melanin in the hair.

It has also been reported to stop postpartum hair loss and often used in shampoos to help improve scalp circulation and provide strength to the hair. The stimulation of the production of sebum encourages healthy hair growth through its stimulation of DHEA.

There are various ways to consume ashwagandha to benefit your hair. These include the following -

  1. Consuming it - Ashwagandha can be taken orally through supplements or as a refreshing tea.
  2. Applying it - Another way to use it is to directly apply to the scalp and hair. Create a paste with the powder and warm distilled water and apply the magical herb directly to your scalp and hair. Simply apply the paste to sectioned hair and massage into the hair and scalp with your fingertips. Cover your scalp with a plastic cap and a towel for 30-45 minutes before rinsing well and styling as usual.
  3. Adding it - Just adding some powder or drops of oil to your shampoo will help you relieve an irritated or inflamed scalp while enhancing the blood circulation to the scalp assisting in healthier hair growth.

How To Use Ashwagandha for Skin?

Ashwagandha is a superfood that promises beautiful, glowing skin and healthy nails. Ashwagandha has high levels of antioxidants that fight signs of ageing such as wrinkles, dark spots, fine lines, and blemishes. It also contains alkaloids that act on the nervous system to ease anxiety and stress, which in turn have a direct impact on the health of our skin and hair.

This is how Ashwagandha works -

  1. Moisturizes: Ashwagandha soothes and protects against dry, rough skin.
  2. Cleanses: The compounds referred to as withanolides help cleanse dirt and impurities, which can prevent clogged pores and acne.
  3. Heals: A fluid mix of ashwagandha can be applied as a cream to treat cuts, bruises, and skin infection.

DHEA and estrogen help in maintaining the skin youthful by stimulating the collagen generation and increasing the natural skin oils. It also lowers cortisol levels and prevents stress from ageing the skin.

For healthy and glowing skin, mix 2 teaspoons of Ashwagandha powder with 1 teaspoon of dried ginger and one teaspoon of dried lemon peel. Boil the mixture together in 1 cup of water and apply the mixture when it is slightly cooled. So there you have it- the secret to healthy skin right under your nose.

Benefits of Ashwagandha powder when consumed with milk

According to Ayurveda, it’s best to consume Ashwagandha with milk. Why?

In Ayurveda, an Anupama (vehicle) is the way medicine is administered. It is the vehicle that serves the action of the herb. It forms an indispensable part of Ayurvedic treatment. The herb or oushadhi becomes more effective when given with a suitable vehicle after considering the stage and strength of the patient and of course the disease.

According to Ayurvedic text, the Charaka Samhita, milk is beneficial to the mind and body. It is sweet in taste and has cool energy and a sweet post-digestive effect. Its overall effect is pleasing to the mind and body.

Ayurveda considers milk to be the best vehicle (Anupama) for the body’s seven tissue systems. Milk is especially good for the blood, bone, plasma and the reproductive system.

According to Ayurveda, milk has different effects on the body based on the time at which it’s consumed during the day. Milk consumed in the morning increases power, body mass and appetite. Milk taken in the afternoon increases appetite and may even help in reducing the size of kidney stones. Milk taken at night relieves various aches and pains.

Ashwagandha and milk possess similar properties, both are considered rejuvenators and hence are an optimal combination. Taking ashwagandha with milk can give more solid results in cases of starvation and tuberculosis. It is helpful in gaining muscular strength, managing weight and curbing malnutrition.

The scholar Sushruta also indicated that Ashwagandha served with milk serves as a medicated clyster in Vata disorders and anorectal bleeding.

How to prepare Ashwagandha with milk?

Add 4 cups of milk and 10 grams of ashwagandha powder to a pan. Boil the mixture until its appearance turns to a thick paste. Then extract it from the heat. Let the mixture sit for 10 minutes. You may add 1 tsp of sugar to this. This ashwagandha milk recipe is beneficial if consumed on an empty stomach as an empty stomach condition provides better absorption of the active substances of ashwagandha. Just ensure that you are not lactose intolerant or milk doesn’t result in acidity on an empty stomach.

Dosage and how to consume Ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha root powder can generally be used at daily dosages of 120 mg to 2g in combination with other preparations. However, it is advised to consult a doctor before starting with the consumption of this herb. Pregnant and lactating women are advised not to consume Ashwagandha as abortifacient properties have been reported for ashwagandha.

  1. To Reduce Stress and Anxiety: Most benefits are linked to dosages of 500–600 mg per day taken for at least one month.

Isn’t it interesting to know how a single shrub can be so useful. Let’s quickly look at the science behind this to get a better perspective.

What exactly makes Ashwagandha so beneficial?

The key chemical structures of Ashwagandha endow it with its unique medicinal properties. It works like this - All plants possess an array of special compounds known as phytochemicals. In simple words, because plants cannot move around, these phytochemicals exist to perform specific tasks.

Some phytochemicals act as an immune system, responding to attacking antibodies. Some exist to deter insects from eating them as the plant cannot move around to defend itself. Some phytochemicals simply help the plant to grow fast and strong.

When consumed, these chemicals can overlap with ones that activate pathways in our bodies and can have a very meaningful effect on our bodies. What makes ashwagandha so special is that it has a large quantity of these phytochemicals, which makes it extremely beneficial and positively affects various systems in our bodies.

Safety & Precautions:

Although Ashwagandha is considered safe for consumption, pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as people with diseases, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes,  may need to avoid it.

Ashwagandha may also interact with thyroid, blood sugar and blood pressure medications.

People taking these types of medication should consult with their doctor before supplementing with the medicinal herb.

Side Effects of Ashwagandha:

Ashwagandha is considered well-tolerated in small to medium doses. But there haven't been enough long-term studies to examine possible side effects.

Pregnant women should avoid using ashwagandha because it can cause early delivery. Although ashwagandha supplements are generally well-tolerated when taken short-term in typical dosages, mild to moderate side effects such as headache, sleepiness, and stomach upset have been reported. Rarely, allergic reactions and rapid heartbeat have been reported.

Be aware, however, that ashwagandha can potentially lower blood pressure and blood sugar, and increase thyroid hormone levels.

Conclusion

Hope that this article provided you with useful insights into the benefits and uses of the magical herb - Ashwagandha. You can start using Ashwagandha topically as oil or face pack to get all its benefits for your skin. However, do remember to consult a doctor before consuming this ancient ayurvedic medicine. Keep in mind the safety note and side effects as well.

How To Make Coconut Milk At Home?

Homemade coconut milk is not only a healthier and fresher alternative to store-bought variants, but it also proves beneficial for your hair and scalp.

This nutrient-rich elixir is loaded with vitamins like B12 and C, as well as essential minerals like iron, magnesium, and phosphorus, making it a wonderful treatment for various hair concerns such as dryness, frizz, and split ends.

Here's how you can make your own coconut milk at home:

Ingredients:

  1. Fresh mature coconut (ripe)
  2. 2 cups of water

Steps:

  1. Grating the Coconut: Start by finely grating the fresh coconut. This step is essential to extract maximum milk.
  2. Boil Water: In a pot, bring two cups of water to a boil.
  3. Soaking: Once the water has boiled, add the grated coconut into it. Allow the mixture to soak for about five minutes. This process helps in releasing the milk from the grated coconut.
  4. Straining the Mixture: Take a muslin cloth (or a cheese cloth) and strain the mixture into another bowl. This will separate the coconut milk from the grated pulp.
  5. Extracting the Milk: Press the muslin cloth firmly to squeeze out as much coconut milk as possible.
  6. Storing: Pour the extracted coconut milk into a glass container. For best results and a thicker consistency, you can freeze the milk overnight.

Note: If you're aiming to use coconut milk specifically for hair treatments, it works best when applied weekly. It can be utilized as both a scalp treatment and a conditioner. While Coconut milk is readily available in canned form, making it at home ensures that you get the freshest and most nutrient-dense product.

With its rich protein and vitamin content, it's particularly beneficial for those with curly or wavy hair, aiding in rebuilding damaged strands and keeping them nourished.

How Long Can You Leave Coconut Milk In Hair?

Coconut milk is a versatile ingredient that has found its way into various hair care products, each designed with a specific purpose and application time. Here's a breakdown of how long you can leave coconut milk in your hair based on different formulations:

  • Shampoo with Coconut Milk: If you're using a shampoo that's infused with coconut milk, adhere to the directions provided by the manufacturer. Typically, after creating a rich lather, it's advisable to rinse it out immediately.
  • Coconut Milk Conditioner: A conditioner containing coconut milk should be kept in your hair for a short duration, usually a few minutes, before rinsing it off thoroughly in the shower.
  • Homemade Hair Mask: If you're whipping up a homemade coconut milk hair mask, it's best to let it sit in your hair for about 15 to 20 minutes. This ensures that the hair absorbs the maximum benefits before you rinse it out.
  • Styling Products with Coconut Milk: Hair styling products infused with coconut milk are designed to stay in your hair throughout the day or until you decide to shampoo next. There's no need to rinse them out shortly after application.
  • Leave-In Conditioner: Coconut milk can act as a fabulous leave-in conditioner. If you're using it in this way, you can let it remain in your hair all day. Daily application provides deep conditioning benefits, making your hair feel soft and well-nourished, especially when you're prepping for a special event.

However, a word of caution for those with oily scalps: if your hair tends to get greasy quickly, it might be best to limit the application to just 30 minutes before rinsing. For those with dry hair ends, applying Coconut milk specifically on the ends as a leave-in conditioner can work wonders, offering hydration and protection throughout the day.

Side Effects Of Coconut Milk For Hair

Like any natural product, it's essential to be aware of potential side effects or concerns related to Coconut milk, even if they are relatively rare.

  • Skin Allergy Test is Crucial: Even though Coconut milk is generally considered safe for most people, individual sensitivities can vary. It's always recommended to conduct a patch test before using coconut milk extensively on the scalp or hair. In some cases, people might experience a skin rash, making it essential to ensure you're not sensitive to the particular form of coconut milk you're using.
  • Oily Texture: One of the defining characteristics of Coconut milk is its naturally high fat content, giving it an oily texture. If you already have oily hair or an oily scalp, using coconut milk might exacerbate the oiliness. It's crucial to strike a balance and determine the right amount and frequency of application based on your hair type.
  • Nourishing but Not for Everyone: There's no denying the numerous benefits coconut milk offers to the hair. Ingredients like lauric acid and medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) present in coconut milk play a pivotal role in enhancing scalp health and moisturizing the hair.

However, while many swear by Coconut milk as a deep conditioning treatment, it might not be suitable for everyone, especially those with specific hair or scalp conditions.

A balanced diet is just as important for the health of your hair (and skin), as it is for your hair. Including seasonal fruits and vegetables, lentils, and whole grains in your daily diet makes a huge difference. Avoid processed foods and try to eat clean as much as possible. Add superfoods such as white sesame seeds, almonds, walnuts, avocado, ghee, dates, raisins, along with herbs and spices to your daily diet. Even while oiling your hair make sure you’re not massaging with too much pressure or the friction caused will only make matters worse. Your hair is most vulnerable when it’s wet, so make sure you’re not tugging or brushing it until it’s almost dry to protect it from damage. When detangling wet hair, use a wide-toothed comb; once dry, brush your hair with a regular comb.  Avoid blow-drying every time you wash your hair and allow your hair to air dry. Additionally, don’t tie your hair in tight ponies and buns and opt for pillowcases made of hair-friendly fabrics such as satin.

#11. Get enough sleep

A good night’s sleep is crucial to our well-being in more ways than one. It affects our hormones, our stress levels, our skin and even our hair. The human body produces a hormone called melatonin which regulates sleep as well as hair growth. Poor quality or inadequate sleep results in decreased levels of melatonin which has a direct impact on hair loss. Sleeping is also how the human mind copes with stress and rebalances itself. Insufficient sleep can cause more stress which results in more hair loss.

It is rightly said that if you take care of the smaller things, the bigger things are going to fall into place. Follow these simple yet effective tips as part of your everyday hair care routine and you’ll be able to solve your biggest hair woes. How To Calm Your Mind – 6 Ayurvedic Breathing Techniques

God breathed the breath of life into man's nostrils, and man became a living soul.  -- Genesis 2:7 (AV)

Perhaps the beautiful miracle of life is our breath. We might fail to pay much attention to our breath and its many wonders on a daily basis. However, it’s our breathing that enables us to live our life.
‘Prana’, a Sanskrit term for life translates to ‘The Breath of God’ which means that God created the universe with his own breath. ‘Breath’ is synonymous with ‘life’ in most religions, traditions, and languages. Therefore, it isn’t surprising that the answers to all worries and troubles indeed lie in this force of life - the breath.

How To Calm Your Mind - 6 Ayurvedic Calming Techniques

Thousands of years before modern medicine started to emphasize nurturing the mind-body connection, Indian sages had developed Ayurveda - one of the world’s most sophisticated and powerful mind-body health systems. They had found a powerful tool of meditation to balance the mind and body.

Ayurveda says that the mind and body are inseparable. When you meditate, you not only quieten your mind and expand your awareness, but also restore the natural balance of the body due to mind-body connection.

As your heart and breath restore itself to its natural pace, the production of ‘stress’ hormones is controlled and the production of neurotransmitters that enhance happiness is increased.

Powerful, isn’t it? But how can you utilize the practice of meditation to calm your mind and practice self-compassion on a day-to-day basis? We’ve compiled some of the best and most useful mind calming and breathing techniques for you.

1. Connect to the source

Why is breathing so miraculous? Because unlike all other activities that we do, it doesn’t require our will power. It keeps happening involuntarily even if we don’t pay any attention to it. Even if we try to hold our breath, we can’t do it for maybe more than a few minutes.

Which brings us to the question - Who is breathing? What is the source of the breathing process?

Can we simply observe the breath to and try to connect to this source of life force?

This is the simple practice of meditation. By simply observing the breath, without trying to control it, we are able to connect deeper to ourselves and connect with the life force. This connection, the experience, and the awareness it brings help us calm our minds.

2. Find The Peace Within

Have you ever noticed that in any given situation, two different people seem to have strikingly different reactions? Imagine two people sitting on a bench in a park when it suddenly starts to rain. While one person could express joy at the wonderful weather, the other person could be complaining about getting drenched in the rain.

This simple example exhibits how the inner turmoil within us exhibits itself on a day-to-day basis. If we are not at peace within, we are more likely to react negatively to the trying circumstances in our life, staying caught in a loop of negativity.

How to calm your mind? How to escape this loop of negativity? Here’s a meditation technique that we can use to find peace within. It starts with focussing on our breath and observing it. Take a gentle inhalation from the nose and three gentle exhalations from the mouth.

Once you are able to concentrate deeply, bring your attention to the center of the forehead between our eyebrows, to your spiritual eye. This is your doorway to higher awareness. When you bring your attention to the spiritual eye by mentally gazing upwards, try to release tension in your forehead and try to imagine looking at a point at a distance. Perhaps, you can imagine looking at the sunrise or a distant mountain.

Feel the expanding calmness and experience the universal peace that is always within you. Gently open your eyes.

3. Ask Yourself - Where’s Your Mind?

Every now and then, it’s helpful to stop and ask yourself the simple question - How’s your mind and acknowledge how you’re feeling. Follow this with a series of slow deep breathing. Use your stomach to increase the capacity and ensure that every inhale and exhale takes about 3 seconds each. You can count to three in your head. Repeat the breath cycles several times to feel calm.

This is a simple technique that you can do anytime, in the middle of any kind of work that you’re engaged in. It doesn’t require a lot of time but it’s helpful nevertheless.

4. Meet Your Energy

Sometimes, we tend to feel disconnected from ourselves. We feel disoriented and unsure of what we want to do. What this means is that we are not centered. It means that our energy is going outward instead of flowing through us. It’s possible to bring back the energy to our calm center and push it up through us by creating magnetism through inhalation and exhalation.

Simply close your eyes and inhale to expand your stomach. Experiencing the energy rising, magnetizing our center. When you exhale, imagine the energy descending your center. You can visualize this energy as light. Post this visualize yourself standing strong amidst storm connected to your center.

Through this technique, you will be able to get rid of negative emotions and recharge yourself with positive energy.

5. Nadi Shodhanam Pranayam To Balance The Mind

Throughout the day, the amount of air we breathe through our two nostrils varies. One is sometimes more open than the other. This Pranayam harmonizes the flow of breath between these two nostrils and also calms us down by balancing our energy,

For this Pranayama, create a hand mudra by closing the first two fingers. We begin by pressing our thumb to our right nostril and slowly inhale from our left nostril. Now, we hold the breath for three seconds by closing the mudra and bringing our little finger to our left nostril. Then, we lift our thumb to exhale from the right nostril. We repeat this exercise from the alternate nostril and repeat the complete cycle multiple times. Remember to inhale from one and exhale from another.

Whenever you feel very chaotic in your mind, you can try a modification called Chandrabhedi. In this technique, we always inhale from the left nostril and exhale from the right nostril. Repeat this cycle until you feel a sense of calm and centredness.

6. Bhramari Pranayam To Cool The Brain

This cooling breathing technique is especially useful for cooling the mind after a day of strenuous mental activity. To start this Pranayama, we use our thumbs to close our ears and rest our fingers gently on our eyes.

Then, we use our exhalation breath to make a buzzing sound from our throat that reverberates through our ears. You can try doing this with multiple exhalation cycles until you experience a sense of coolness and calmness.

How To Calm Your Mind - The Solution Lies Within Us

To conclude, we would like to remind you that even in our most difficult circumstances, the solutions lie within us. Meditation techniques help us strengthen the frontal lobe of our brain which has all the wisdom we need to find the answer to our questions. This is the reason we often tend to look up when trying to think of a solution to a problem.

This frontal lobe is the seed of concentration. When we develop it, it gives us increased calmness and mental clarity, which in turn helps us make better decisions. Our stress level goes down. We are able to control our reactions and improve the quality of our relationships.

It isn't merely about - how to calm your mind. In your breath, you hold the answers and power to connect with the life force to transform your entire life.

The manner in which various parts of the Peepal eliminate water and phlegm (sweating, therapeutic vomiting, diuretic action, and expectorant effects); as well as heat (skin surface and internal purgation, antipyretic/temperature reduction) has a beneficial and balancing impact on digestive and skin health.

peepal tree leaves

The Peepal leaf is inherently astringent. When heated, it acts as a purgative tonic. Few common uses of peepal leaves are:

  • Treating persistent skin itching
  • Repairing Dry, cracked heels
  • Treating boils, pimples, and blackheads

The bark of the Peeple tree, rich in vitamin K, is an effective complexion corrector and preserver; which makes bark extractions valuable for:

  • Strengthening blood capillaries and minimising inflammation
  • Healing skin bruises faster, and increasing skin resilience
  • Treating pigmentation issues, wrinkles, dark circles
  • Lightening surgery and pregnancy marks, scars, and stretch marks.

The nutrient rich peepal leaf and peepal bark help are used as a part of numerous Ayurvedic health remedies. Let’s now explore some powerful Peeple tree uses and benefits for health and beauty.

How to Use Peepal Tree?

The Peepal tree, revered for its significance in various traditions, can also be used in several herbal preparations:

  1. Powdered Dried Leaves: The leaves can be dried, ground into a fine powder, and consumed.
  2. Powdered Dried Bark: The bark of the tree can similarly be dried and powdered for use.
  3. Raw Leaves Juice: Fresh leaves can be crushed to extract their juice.
  4. Decoction of Bark: A concentrated liquid made by boiling the bark in water can also be consumed.
  5. Skincare and Haircare Products: Many skincare and haircare products have Peepal as a key ingredient due to its beneficial properties. These products can be used as directed for potential skin and hair benefits.

However, it's vital to exercise caution. Always consult with a qualified doctor before incorporating any herbal supplements into your regimen.

Additionally, never discontinue or replace any ongoing modern medical treatment with an ayurvedic or herbal preparation without first seeking expert advice.

Peepal Tree and Banyan Tree - The Twin Flame

The Peepal is also known as the Sacred Fig, and the peepal botanical name is Ficus religiosa. The familiar and popular Banyan (Ficus benghalensis) is a relative of the Peepal, as are Gular/Dumar (Ficus racemosa), Pukar (Ficus benjamina) and Kamarup (Ficus microcarpa).

peepal tree and banyan tree

The Banyan, or Vata (Sanskrit), and Peepal varieties are treated as Male and Female counterparts of each other, which is why they are often cultivated in close proximity. Banyan has similar uses and is treated as a remedy for:

  • Swelling, skin wounds, and excessive sweating
  • Uterine strengthening, vaginal diseases, and breast firming in women
  • Premature ejaculation in men

For reinvigorating detoxification, freshness, and smoothness from Ficus benghalensis, try Kama’s award-winning Kumkumadi Brightening Ayurvedic Face Scrub, or Kumkumadi Miraculous Beauty Fluid Ayurvedic Night Treatment

You can build your own skincare routine by these products. The latter is more suited to very dehydrated or pigmented, and mature skin types; though it may be included in late 20’s-early 30’s skincare regimen. For men, we have the Himalayan Almond Deep Cleansing Face Scrub.

Ayurveda For Your Lungs

Your lungs are constantly working to provide your body with all the oxygen it needs to function well. The respiratory system is vital for you to live. However, just like all other systems of our body, even the respiratory system is prone to wear and tear, more so due to high levels of toxins and pollutants in the air.

Lung health also varies from season to season. In Ayurvedic context, when too much Vata (space +air) accumulates in the lungs we experience breathlessness, dry coughs, asthma, hoarseness of the voice, weak voice, pain when breathing and even lung allergies. If you are experiencing any of these, your lung health might be out of balance.

Ayurveda has effective remedies to bring an agitated dosha back into balance through diet, lifestyle and herb concoctions. To ensure the health of our lungs, let’s dive into ancient wisdom that’s highly effective even today.

UNDERSTANDING AMA AND OJAS

Bala, which means strength, is the Ayurvedic word for immunity. There are two major elements that impact Bala, and these are Ama and Ojas. Ama is the sticky product of undigested food, and lowers immunity in the body. When it spreads in the body, it clogs the channels that carry food to the cells and the channels that remove wastes. Ojas is the opposite of Ama. It is the product of perfect digestion, and enhances health and wellbeing. The goal of all treatments and therapies of Ayurveda is to enhance Ojas. Lung health imbalance is caused by increase an in Ama in the lungs.

CAUSES OF INCREASES AMA IN LUNGS

  1. Improper diet - Consuming heavy, oily, cold foods that are hard to break down or eating leftovers the next morning will hamper the digestive system
  2. Polluted air - Toxin particles like smoke, dust, pollen, dirt circulating in the air enter the lungs while breathing and cause irritation.
  3. Seasonal Changes - Our body functions differently in each season owing to different temperature and climate. Seasons like autumn and early spring make us especially prone to respiratory problems.
  4. Exercise - Both no exercise or extremely strenuous exercise is harmful for the lungs. Heavy lifting beyond your capacity causes strain on the lungs while on the other hand not exercising reduces the oxygen intake capacity of your lungs.
  5. Emotional grief - An overload of stress or grief can also affect the lungs.

INCREASING OJAS IN LUNGS BY INCLUDING AYURVEDIC HERBS IN YOUR DIET

Consuming the right foods plays a vital part in healing and strengthening of the lungs. Ayurveda suggests herbs, to be included in your diet, which will aid respitory functions in your body.

Cardamon - Add this aromatic, stimulating and refreshing herb to your diet to strengthen your lungs and ignite your digestive fire.
Eucalyptus - Loaded with antioxidants, this herb not only boosts immunity of the lungs but also soothes irritated sinus passages and fights congestion in lungs.
Licorice - This soothing herb is especially effective for dry cough. It softens the mucus membranes of the throat, lungs and stomach.
Pippali - A powerful lung rejuvenator that helps with asthmatic conditions and eliminates toxins.
Holy Basil - This sacred refreshing herb possesses healing powers and removes toxins from the lungs.

IMPROVING LUNG HEALTH WITH DAILY PRAYANAMA

Breathing exercises are a lifesaver for your lungs. Dedicate 15-20 mins a day to actively work with your breath and you’ll breathe easier with stronger lungs and clearer airways. Pranayama is an excellent way to revitalize prana within the body. Pranayama is a practice in controlling the breath. It cleanses and strengthens the physical body while calming the mind. It is important to practice with the proper posture to allow the breath to move freely in the body.

Healthy lungs bring vitality (Prana). That's why Ayurveda refers to the respiratory system as Prana Vaha Srotas. With these tips you will not only prevent illness, but also nurture your lungs so they can fulfil their life-sustaining role each day.

Ayurveda-Approved Summertime Drinks

Every Indian household has sensorial memories of home-made Summertime drinks, prepared by mothers, aunts and grandmothers. These drinks energised us and made us feel good. This is because these recipes focussed on what wise women running Indian homes knew to be the source of beauty and wellness problems – digestion! This is also one of the principal tenets of the Ayurvedic view on health and vitality.

As the incessantly hectic pace of Life continues to wreak havoc on our skin, hair, and digestive health, is it not a good idea to revisit the benefits of these simple, wholesome recipes? We call them ‘beauty drinks’, because their balancing impact on internal physiology results in a soothed, radiant, and reinvigorated outer appearance. Let us look at a few quintessential favourites beyond the all-too familiar Lemonade or Shikanji; and understand how they work in our favour as we go about our day in the relentless Summer heat.

ROSE, JASMINE AND KHUS SHERBETS

Sherbet is derived from the Arabic word shariba (‘to drink’). Sherbets became popular in India during the rule of the Mughal emperor Babur. It is believed he would send people to the Himalayas, to procure fresh ice for his favourite drink. Rose, Jasmine, and Khus (Vetiver) are aromatherapy favourites for the Indian Summer. It is not surprising then, that they should make their way into Summer food and drink as well.

Ayurveda upholds Rose and Jasmine as Sattvic, or ‘Transcendental, Life-Giving and Pure.’ They are believed to soothe the heart, in that they settle scattered and troubled emotions, relieving stress and anxiety in the process. Rose helps regulate internal body temperature, while Jasmine helps replenish the body’s natural hydration levels. Rose positively impacts Sadhaka Pitta, or the sub-dosha of Pitta that governs emotional wellbeing. It washes over Sadhaka Agni, or the digestive fire that 'cooks' emotions, moderating and maintaining its 'flickering' at optimum levels. Ayurveda says that Khus induces Saumanasya Janana, or ‘Mind-Body Tranquillity.’ Khus Sherbet makes for a sublime thirst quencher. It also helps boost blood circulation and provides antioxidant protection for skin against free radical damage.

CHAAS/CHHAACHH & LASSI

Chaas/Chhaachh and Lassi are traditional (and very popular!) Yoghurt or Buttermilk based drinks in Indian homes. They are Summer staples especially at the lunch table, because of their nearly-instantaneous cooling effect, specifically on the digestive tract. They buffer against dehydration and are the perfect option if you know you are likely to spend a long day out in the Sun. Chaas/Chhaachh and Lassi are quite similar, except the latter can be prepared with Sugar, but the former usually is not. Mango is the general favourite for flavouring a sweet Lassi, but a savoury version – with Rock Salt, Cumin, Mint or Curry leaves and Asafoetida – has its own fan following. Chaas/Chhaachh is especially popular in Gujarat and Rajasthan. The recipe includes the same spices and condiments as Lassi, but depending on personal taste, a pinch of Red Chilli Powder or sliced Green Chillies may also be added.

Even Ayurveda recommends these drinks because they help calm the stomach after a heavy, or spicy meal, prevent dehydration, and reduce the discomfort of swelling or bloating, and constipation.

AAM PANNA & PANAKAM

Aam Panna is a sweet-tangy cooler, its principal ingredient being Green Mango. Ayurveda says that the sour, astringent, and cooling qualities of Green Mango should be balanced with the complementary condiments, so that healthy digestion is supported, and the body is strengthened and revitalised. Aam Panna is made with Sugarcane Juice or Jaggery, Cardamom, and Black Pepper. Panakam is traditionally prepared in South India during the festival of Ram Navami. It is called a ‘Vedic drink’ because it is believed to be the favourite of the Indian God Narsimha, and of Goddesses like Durga and Shakti. The recipe includes Jaggery, Salt, Ginger, Lemon, Water, Cardamom and even Tulsi (Holy Basil).

Both Aam Panna and Panakam bolster the immune system, help prevent diarrhoea and dehydration, protect the health and strength of eyes and improve the tone and texture of skin. Jaggery, the main ingredient in Panakam, is Ayurveda’s natural alternative to processed sugar, and also forms the base of liquid fermented Ayurvedic medicines. It is believed to balance the 3 Doshas – Vata, Pitta, Kapha. Jaggery is also an effective blood purifier for a clean, blemish-free complexion.

How To Overcome Irregular Periods Naturally

The menstrual cycle of a woman is a window to her overall reproductive health. The regular menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, however, our bodies don’t always work like clockworks. We might experience delays or irregularities in our periods once in while. As many as 30 percent women report having experienced irregular periods during their childbearing years.

However, if the periods become highly regular, it indicates that the body is going through severe hormonal imbalances. While it is normal to experience some discomfort and pain during periods, irregular periods need to be treated with caution as they could result from other health complications.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF IRREGULAR PERIODS OR A DISTURBED MENSTRUAL CYCLE?

If the number of days between stopping and starting your period is significantly different each month, you have an irregular cycle. Here are a few things that you might experience as a result of irregular periods.

  1. You experience bleeding that is not a part of your natural periodic cycle.
  2. You get periods even after menopause.
  3. Your periods are longer or heavier than usual
  4. You get periods even after menopause.
  5. You have your period more often than once in 21 days.
  6. You have your period less often than once in 35 days

Even if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, there is no need to worry. In most cases, irregular periods are due to hormonal balance caused by improper lifestyle and diet. Let’s explore what Ayurveda says about the menstrual cycle and menstrual health.

AYURVEDA’S TAKE ON MENSTRUAL HEALTH

Ayurveda provides with immense knowledge and insight into women’s reproductive system which helps us understand how to overcome irregular periods naturally. The menstrual cycle is considered a blessing as it provides women’s body a chance to renew and eliminate the toxins.

Ayurveda suggests that the menstrual cycle of every woman is influenced by the three doshas - Vata, Kapha, and Pitta. By understanding the dominant doshas in your body, you can make the required changes in your diet and lifestyle to help maintain a regular menstrual cycle.

WHAT CAUSES IRREGULAR PERIODS ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA?

Apana Vata is the ayurvedic subdosha of Vata that governs the menstrual cycle. It is located in the lower abdomen and is responsible for the downward flow through the intestines, urinary and reproductive tracts. The imbalance of this particular dosha is responsible for irregular periods according to Ayurveda. Stress, improper diet, long-term illnesses, lack of physical exercise, over-exertion and certain medications result in such an imbalance of Apana Vata.

In some cases, irregular periods are caused by complex underlying conditions like Ectopic pregnancy, Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, Anemia, Anorexia or Thyroid. It is also common to experience irregular periods just at the onset of periods (during puberty) and during the pre-menopause phase. In all conditions, one can find some relief by following an Ayurvedic lifestyle and diet.

THE AYURVEDIC APPROACH

PROPER DIET

Ayurveda emphasizes on following a regular and healthy diet that is rich in nutrients. If one doesn’t eat at regular intervals and at proper hours, the hormone levels fluctuate which in turn affects the menstrual cycle. During menstruation, one must stick to lighter meals and avoid meat, pickles, and sweets so that the digestive system functions well and doesn’t create further discomfort.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Maintain a healthy lifestyle and exercise regularly throughout the month. Yoga is most effective in regulating the hormones and menstrual cycle. Exercising regularly also helps in maintaining weight which is also important to maintain a regular cycle. Sudden loss or gain in weight directly influences the menstrual cycle.

During menstruation, provide yourself with proper rest. Exerting yourself during menstruation can be harmful to your health. The traditional wisdom of resting during your menstrual cycle holds strong for having a healthy hormonal and uterine balance.

AYURVEDIC HERBS FOR IRREGULAR PERIODS

  1. ASHOKA - Ashoka is the queen of herbs for the female reproductive system and the literal meaning of the word ‘Ashoka’ is the ‘remover of sorrows’. The decoction made from the bark of Ashoka tree is effective in treating irregular periods. To prepare the decoction, 10 grams of the bark of Ashoka needs to be boiled in 2 cups of water until only about a cup remains. Honey or jaggery can be added to decoction to make it easier to drink.
  2. SANDALWOOD - Decoction of sandalwood roots or leaves is also helpful in treating irregular periods. For best results, add the decoction to cow’s milk and drink it daily.
  3. HIBISCUS - Hibiscus flower has a lot of medicinal properties that are beneficial for the reproductive system. One way to consume hibiscus is in the form of Hibiscus tea. The relaxing herbal tea works like an Ayurvedic tonic for irregular periods. Another way to include hibiscus in the diet is to fry two flowers in ghee and take them with warm milk daily.
  4. LICORICE - More popularly known as Mulethi, licorice is effective in regulating the menstrual cycle when consumed with rice wash water. Another way to reap the benefits of licorice is to drink tea made from its roots.
  5. ASAFETIDA - Asafedita (Hing) is well-known for its benefits to the digestive system and hence it’s added to the preparation of most meals in India. However, few people are aware of its benefits to the female reproductive system. By stimulating the production of the female hormone progesterone that increases blood flow to the uterus, it regularizes periods and regulates the menstrual cycle. One great way to include Asafedita in the diet is to add it with buttermilk.

The female body is truly unique and beautiful. If we align it to its natural cycle by following a good lifestyle and diet, we can alleviate ourselves from problems that are caused by hormonal imbalances. Ayurveda provides with solutions that really work at the root level to solve the problem of irregular periods naturally and we have equipped you with some of them to help you on your way towards balance and health. Hope you find these tips helpful for regulating your menstrual cycle.

Balancing Sadhaka Pitta For Emotional Health

According to Ayurveda, the mind and the heart are one and the same. In the Charaka Samhita, an ayurvedic text, it is said, hridaye chetana sthanam, which means, "the seat of consciousness is in the heart."

Our mental and emotional state is constantly influenced by the balance of all of the doshas. Every experience we have, each thought and feeling, has its impact on the doshas and subsequently on our overall health. Hence, our physical health is deeply connected to our emotional well-being.

UNDERSTANDING SADHAKA PITTA

One sub-dosha that stands out when talking about emotional and mental health in the Ayurveda context is Sadhaka Pitta - the caretaker of the heart. It plays an important role in processing life events and emotions.

SADHAKA PITTA’S INFLUENCE ON EMOTIONS

When Sadhaka Pitta is in balance, it promotes self-confidence, healthy desires, motivation and feelings of fulfilment. However, when out of balance, the same causes negative emotions including self criticism, low self esteem, jealousy and mood swings. In extreme cases, it leads to serious mental health problems like depression and bipolar disorders.

BALANCING OUR SADHAKA PITTA

A special type of Agni called Sadhaka Agni is responsible for helping us process our emotions and let go of difficult memories. Just as someone with strong Agni has a good metabolism and is able to digest food more quickly, someone with strong sadhaka agni processes negative emotions quickly. Some people are born with a strong sadhaka agni while others have a weak sadhaka agni or are going through a difficult time. By strengthening our sadhaka agni, we can balance our sadhaka pitta to improve our mental well-being and help our loved ones experience the same.

AYURVEDA ON BALANCING SADHAKA PITTA

One powerful Ayurvedic herb that is most effective in balancing sadhaka pitta is the Rose. It isn’t a coincidence that rose is linked to romance. Despite its cooling and soothing effect, it’s known to enhance the sadhaka agni. In ancient times, there was a tradition of giving jars of rose petal spread to loved ones. It was meant to inspire unconditional love. It is indeed this tradition that has transformed into present-day tradition of gifting roses on special occasions. Rose in any form boosts positive emotions and elevates the experience of happiness and bliss.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN USE ROSE IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE.

  1. Treat yourself and your loved ones to Rose aromatherapy by simply adding Rose Essential Oil to your bath or by opting for an all Natural Rose Soap made from Rose Water and Rose Oil.
  2. Add Rose Essential Oil to your daily Abhyang (self-massage) and treat your partner with a relaxing and therapeutic massage with Rose Oil to reignite and reminisce the feeling of love.
  3. Use Kama Ayurveda’s Kannauj Rose Scented Candle or Rose Essential Oil in diffusers to create the soothing ambiance that enlivens the senses.
  4. After cleansing your face every morning and night, tone with Pure Rose Water. The decadent floral distillation will refresh, hydrate and tone leaving skin scented with the luxuriant scent of pure Roses.
  5. Including Rose Tea in your daily diet or drinking coconut water with Rose Water daily will further help in balancing sadhaka pitta.

Abhyanga For Complete Skin Care In The Winter

The season of grey skies and chilly winds is upon us. It is the harbinger of all things gloomy – cold and flu, dry skin and fatigue. As the season changes, so does our body. Ayurveda’s foundation lies in the belief that our bodily constitution mirrors each season of the year. Ritucharya, an ancient Ayurveda practice of altering our lifestyle and diet according to the season, outlines this concept. This enables us to build our physical and mental strength to prevent ailments that may happen due to seasonal changes.

The cold weather, causes imbalance in our body and aggravates our Vata dosha, the body's air and space elements, resulting in dry, itching and scaly skin. To balance these effects and protect our skin in the winter season, Ayurveda recommends deep nourishment and regular hydration. For this Abhyanga, self-care with warm oil massage, is considered most effective.

ABHYANGA – THE AYURVEDIC DAILY MASSAGE

Abhyanga, or warm oil massage, is a key Ayurvedic practice, especially in winters, when we need stability and warmth to counteract the Vata-aggravating season. The Sanskrit word Abhyanga means using our own touch to heal and nurture our body.

SIGNIFICANCE OF ABHYANGA

Abhyanga or self-massage is a way to penetrate love and healing (sneha) through the seven dhatus (layers of tissue in the body). Each is successively more concentrated and life-giving. For deep healing to every layer of tissue, the oil should be massaged into the body for 800 matras, which is roughly five minutes. If we consider that the entire body needs this kind of attention, a 15-minute massage is the suggested minimum amount of time.

According to the Charaka Samhita (Vol. 1, V: 88-89) “The body of one who uses oil massage regularly does not become affected much even if subjected to accidental injuries, or strenuous work. By using oil massage daily, a person is endowed with pleasant touch, trimmed body parts and becomes strong, charming and least affected by old age”

ABHYANGA IN THE WINTER SEASON

The preferred oil for Abhyanga in the winter is Sesame Oil, as it is inherently warming. Start your day with a warm oil massage to hydrate the skin, warm the body and increase circulation. Incorporating Abhyanga into your daily routine will alleviate exhaustion and lethargy common in the winter, making you more active.

Dip your fingertips into the warm oil and apply it lightly to the entire body. Wait for 4-5 minutes to allow some of the oil be absorbed by your skin. Then, start massaging the entire body while applying even pressure with the palm and fingers. After you're done, relax for 10-15 minutes and let the oil penetrate deeply into the skin. Dab excess oil off if you like and then follow with a rejuvenating warm bath or shower.

For a more effective massage pay attention to certain areas and techniques. Apply light pressure on sensitive areas like the abdomen. Use a larger amount of oil and spend more time on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands. Use circular motions over rounded areas such as your head or joints. While, straight strokes work best for straight areas such as your arms and legs.

OTHER ELEMENTS OF ABHYANGA

Although body massage is most commonly talked about, there are other parts of the body that require equal attention. Ayurveda suggests self-care treatments for parts like the head (Murdha Thaila) and ears (Karna Purana).

MURDHA TAILA

Excessive or imbalanced Vata dosha can cause obstruction in the flow of the food nutrients to the hair cells. This leads to dry scalp, dry hair, split ends, and finally, thin hair or hair loss. Ayurvedic oils made from Bringraj or Shikakai will strengthen the roots of your hair, prevent premature greying and make your hair lustrous.

First, apply oil first to the crown of your head (Adhipati Marma) and work slowly out from there in circular strokes. Spend a couple of minutes massaging your entire scalp. This will help the oil penetrate the roots and relive the mind from any stress.

KARNA PURANA

Ear massage helps relieve stiffness in the jaw or neck, while nourishing the ear skin. In the morning, using a dropper, fill the ear canals with warm Sesame Oil. Use medium pressure to gently massage the ear canal in a circular motion.

OTHER OILS FOR ABHYANGA

Other natural, organic oils good for Abhyanga are Almond Oil and Coconut Oil. They provide an effective conditioning treatment and soothe dry, sensitive skin. Use Kama Ayurveda’s Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and Organic Sweet Almond Oil for an Ayurvedic solution.

Abhyanga is a highly beneficial treatment during winters as oil massage works to reverse the negative effects of an imbalanced Vata dosha. Add healing and calming essential oils to the base oil to further enhance the benefits of Abhyanga. Practice Abhyanga at least thrice in a week to truly nurture and nourish your body.
